How Your Stats Stack

"Is Attack % additive or a multiplier?" Both - it depends on what you compare it with. This page shows how a hit is really worked out on Echoes of Myrthalis, so you can plan your own build.

The one rule to remember

The same stat adds up. Different stats multiply each other.

All your Attack % from every source is added into one number. That number then multiplies with your Critical Damage %, your PvE Damage % and the rest.

The piles

Think of your damage as a few separate piles. Everything you collect goes onto one of them:

Pile What goes on it
Base attack your weapon's attack, your main stat (STR, DEX or INT, depending on your class), flat attack bonuses
Weapon power the weapon's +upgrade and its rarity (they make the weapon's own attack bigger)
Critical Damage % only on a critical hit
Attack % from gear, awakes, runes, crystals, buffs, systems... all of it
Magic Attack % mage classes' magic skills only - its own pile
PvE Damage % against monsters (PvP Damage % takes its place against players)

Inside a pile, everything is added. +100% Attack from an awake and +100% Attack from a rune make +200% Attack.

The piles multiply each other. Your hit is roughly:

Base attack x Weapon power x Critical x Attack x Magic Attack x PvE

After that, the monster's level and defence take their part, and that is the damage you see.

Example 1: the same stat adds up

You have two Attack % bonuses of +100% each.

  • They add up to +200% Attack, so your damage is x3 (your 100% + 200%).
  • It is not x2 times x2 = x4. Same pile, so they add.

Example 2: different stats multiply

A hit with a base attack of 1,000:

You have Your hit
nothing extra 1,000
+200% Attack (x3) 3,000
...and +100% PvE Damage (x2) 6,000
...and it is a critical hit with +100% Critical Damage (x2 on top of the critical) 12,000 or more

Each new kind of stat multiplies everything before it. That is why mixing stats grows so fast.

Example 3: where should my next stat go?

The same +100% is worth more on your smallest pile.

Say you have +400% Attack and +100% PvE Damage, and you can add one more +100%:

You add +100% to... The pile goes from Your damage grows by
Attack % x5 to x6 +20%
PvE Damage % x2 to x3 +50%

So the PvE line is the better pick here. A pile that is already huge only grows a little with each new bonus, while a small pile grows a lot.

Balance your piles

A build with every pile at a similar size hits harder than a build that stacks one stat to the sky. That is also why Awakening lines are random: there is no single "best" build - check your own piles and fill the smallest.

Main stat and the weapon

  • Your main stat (STR, DEX or INT for your class) goes on the base attack pile together with your weapon's attack. More main stat = a bigger base for every multiplier after it.
  • A higher +upgrade and a higher rarity make the weapon's own attack bigger (see Awakening & Rarity).

Critical hits

  • A critical hit is already about 1.1x to 2x harder by itself (more against monsters below your level).
  • Critical Damage % then multiplies that critical hit. It does nothing on a normal hit, so it needs some critical chance to shine.

Mages and Magic Attack %

  • For mage classes, a magic skill uses Attack % and Magic Attack % - two piles that multiply.
  • Magic Attack % does nothing for auto attacks, and a non-mage class's magic skills use Attack % only.
  • Physical classes have Critical Damage % in that role instead, so both sides grow at a similar speed.

Quick answers

  • "Is Attack % additive?" Yes, with other Attack %.
  • "Is Attack % a multiplier?" Yes, against Critical Damage, PvE Damage and Magic Attack.
  • "Do I stack one stat or spread them?" Spread them: fill your smallest pile first.
  • "Where do I see my piles?" The Character window (H) lists your Attack %, Critical Damage %, PvE Damage % and more, and where each one comes from.
